Why am I not getting pregnant? This was the reason for a young couple ‘s visit to their doctor’s office. The young wife told her doctor that she has regular periods, they have sex at the right time of the month.

Their doctor told them some things to consider before rushing into expensive fertility treatments.

The first thing to consider is how long have you been trying? 80% of couples who are trying will get pregnant in the first 6 months. 90% will conceive after 12 months of trying to get pregnant. These statistics are with having well timed intercourse each and every month. This means that if you haven’t been timing sex with your time for ovulation then you should keep trying! On the other hand, if you have been trying for six months to a year and you’re still not pregnant, something may be wrong. Just because you have regular menstrual periods doesn’t mean that you are in the clear. There are many reasons for infertility.

For women age 35 and older and for men age 40 and older, getting pregnant can take longer than the 6 months to a year. Age affects the quality of eggs and the frequency of ovulation. You may be having a period every month but the eggs and your hormones could be less than ideal for fertilization.

Even though women carry the baby, it still take “two to tango”. 20%-30% on infertile couples discover infertility factors on the man’s side. Male infertility rarely has symptoms that are observable. Therefore it is necessary for men to get a semen analysis.

There may be underlying medical problems that can lead to infertility in both men and women. Problems with the thyroid or undiagnosed diabetes or STD can all lead to infertility.

The bottom line is this. You and your partner may seem to be in perfect health and have regular menstrual cycles, but that doesn’t always guarantee that you will get pregnant. You need to try for at lest 6 months to a full twelve months with on time sex with ovulation before seeking medical help.

The reasons for infertility are not always clear to the lay person. Medical tests may be needed to give you some answers as to “why am I not getting pregnant.”

1. Caffeine Caffine 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

It is believed that caffeine, even in small or moderate amounts, can reduce fertility and also and increased risk of miscarriage. This is admittedly controversial, as some believe that even in very small amounts affect fertility. Others believe that moderate amounts such as 3 cups of coffee are fine and have no affect. However, you are really serious about wanting to get pregnant, and you want to eliminate or reduce the risk of miscarriage, it might be wise to eliminate caffeine altogether. Even decaffeinated coffee and tea, black or green, chocolate, tea and many sodas reportedly have small or tiny amounts of caffeine in them. Again, it is better to give up caffeine totally for a better chance of increasing your fertility and getting pregnant faster. If you have a caffeine addiction, you might consider weaning down your intake of caffeine to make it easier on yourself.

2. Smoking Smoking 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

This is probably the number one reason that affects your fertility and getting pregnant fast. It is a fact that women who smoke are 60% more likely than non-smokers to be infertile. Medical research shows that there is an egg depletion and damage to sperm that is caused by smoking. Smoking is just plain BAD for your health. Hopefully, this will add to the list of incentives to quit. Even is your partner smokes and you don’t, just being around the second hand smoke is very harmful to you. Even when you do get pregnant, and you or your partner smokes, your unborn baby is greatly affected. There are over 2,000 different chemicals in tobacco smoke, and not one of them is good for you, or your baby.

Again, this is a no brainer for most of us. But, it is well worth repeating. Illicit drug use and/or alcohol use is strictly on the DO NOT USE list when trying to conceive, as well as while you are pregnant. Marijuana use specifically suppresses hormone production and causes a reduction in sperm count and possible erectile dysfunction in men and irregular periods in women. Alcohol, even in moderation may not significantly affect your fertility, but you and your partner will want to avoid alcohol completely so your chances of getting pregnant increase.

4. Poor Diet Junk Food 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

As we are being made aware of on a daily basis almost, diet and exercise seem to go hand-in-hand. What you eat has a direct effect of your fertility and your chances of getting pregnant. When you think about it, to get pregnant requires many body organs, and glands to function properly to get to that perfect hormone balance. Most of us don’t even get the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals by eating the right amount of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and protein.

5. Lack of Exercise Woman Exercising 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

If you are sedentary, then it is time to get moving. It is best to find some sort of activity that you like and just do it! Exercising will make you feel better, and help you to lose weight faster (if you need to). It is important to find an activity that you like to do – walking, biking, swimming, roller skating (blading), etc. and it will be much easier for you to stick to it and incorporate it into your daily routine. Just recently, a new study has found that when you are pregnant and you continue to exercise, that you baby will likely grow up to exercise and not get obese. It is important to exercise while you are pregnant. But, always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

6. Obesity or Being Overweight Obesity 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

If your BMI (Body Mass Index) is greater than 25, you are considered overweight and are prone to health risks. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. Losing weight will increase your fertility and chances of getting pregnant right away. Avoid fad diets or skipping meals. Do not starve yourself. It has been proven that if you skip meals, you will only over eat and this leads to an unhealthy eating habit. Do eat, but eat smaller portions more often – every two to three hours, and cut out the junk food.

7. Stressful Lifestyle Stressed Out 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

Stress will not only affect your fertility, it will affect your overall health and place you at greater risk for heart disease and many other health problems. Make it a priority to relax often (at least once a day). Practice deep breathing to help relieve stress. When you are at your desk or sitting in traffic, you can lower your stress level by doing deep breathing exercises. Inhale as deeply as you can with your mouth closed. Then exhale slowly through your mouth. This is an instant stress reliever for me. Try it and see what it does for you! Rolling your shoulders forwards and back is another instant stress reliever. A great stress reliever can be a leisurely walk in a beautiful environment. Go by yourself or go with your mate and use it to catch up on events of the day or just to dream of your future together. A warm bath can also be a great stress reliever, just don’t make it too warm, especially for men, as it could affect sperm quality and quantity.

8. Advanced Age40 Yr Old Woman 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

Advanced age is for conceiving is considered to be age 35 and older. Women who are 35 years old and older do have somewhat of a disadvantage when trying to conceive. It is said that when a female is born she is born with the total amount of eggs she will have her entire life. Thus, at age 35 and beyond, her eggs are considerably “older” than they were in her 20′s, making it more difficult to conceive. Thus, if you happen to be in this older category, then you will need to be even more diligent to be in the best health to increase your changes of getting pregnant faster. Men can be affected by age as well, especially as libido tends to decrease with age. Many men and women have no problem conceiving in this older category.

9. Poor Intercourse Timing Couple in Love 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

A couple needs to have intercourse near the woman’s ovulation time – the closer the better. If a couple just has intercourse “whenever”, their chances of getting pregnant are not as good. Especially for the older couples in their late 30′s to 40′s, timing is crucial to getting pregnant faster. To get the timing right, you need to determine your ovulation date.

One way to track your cycles is by using a basal thermometer. This thermometer is different from the regular fever thermometer. A basal thermometer is an ultra-sensitive thermometer that tracks your body’s most minute temperature shift and helps you calculate when your will ovulate. There are other ways to determining your ovulation date is an ovulation predictor kit (OPK) . There are two kinds of kits – The first one has urine strips and also the fertility monitors. The strips are like a pregnancy test stick. They measure LH (or luteinizing hormone) instead of HCG (the pregnancy hormone). The fertility monitors use saliva to determine your most fertile period by showing a ferning pattern, which will show you when you are most likely to conceive.

10. Physical Issues Woman 1 150x150 Get Pregnant Soon Help! What Am I Doing Wrong?

There are many physical issues that can hinder or decrease your chances of getting pregnant. Eating right, exercising, losing weight, and quitting bad habits can greatly help to heal many of these conditions. There are conditions that you will need to seek medical attention i.e. irregular menstrual cycles, anovulation (lack of ovulation), PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), endometriosis, low sperm motility or mobility, low sperm count, or luteal phase defect, among others.

If you have been trying for six months or longer to get pregnant or if you and your partner are 35 or older, you should see a medical doctor such as a reproductive endocrinologist. They can help you decide which testing is best for you and your partner. Prenatal testing is recommended even if you are just beginning to think of getting pregnant. Semen analysis will determine sperm health. Woman’s symptoms will also help to determine which tests should be performed for her. If you know what your conditions are, you will most likely overcome them.

Be Sure You’re Eating Enough!

You need to be sure you’re eating enough on a regular basis. If you’re currently on a diet, that’s one of the fist things you need to stop if you’re having trouble with pregnancy. The body needs so much energy to support a growing baby, so when this support is not there in the form of calories, problems will arise, and it could be damaging to you, and the baby.

Make sure you’re eating an appropriate level for your current body-weight unless you have been instructed differently by your doctor.

Check Your Exercise Levels

Moving on, you’ll want to look at your energy levels as well. While diet plays a significant role in your ability to conceive, if you’re exercising to much, or to hard  in a week, this too could prevent you from having a baby.

It’s always better to keep your workouts at a more intermediate level while you are trying to get pregnant. This will also ensure that you’re successful with your pregnancy.

Assess How Long You’ve Been Off The Pill

Finally, also ask yourself how long you’ve been off the pill. In some cases, it can take many women months of being off the pill to begin to experience a normalized menstrual cycle again.

This is going to depend on individual factors and the exact type of pill you’re on. You should talk to your doctor about this so you can understand what to expect. You must be patient if you’ve been using the pill for a number of years because it’s the body following its natural process of regulating menstruation again.

Once this is normalized then you can look into more issues that could be causing a problem.

Have Him Examined

When most couples are having trouble getting pregnant, the first thing they think is there might be an issue with the woman. Many overlook the fact that it could be a problem on the man’s part as well.

If you’ve been trying for a couple of months now, this is something you definitely should consider. Have your partner looked at by the doctor to make sure everything is functioning as it should be.

So, keep these points in mind if you’re really having trouble getting pregnant. Always get a check-up first to ensure you are healthy and capable of producing a baby at this point in time. Then the best thing you can do is just  relax. As hard as it may be, the more you stress the lower the chances that you will actually conceive a child.
